About Team Autotecnica

Our Mission

Our philosophy is to approach the championship with the goal to win. To achieve this goal we will develop the car and the driver to obtain their maximum combined performance.

Company History

Team Autotecnica has been recently crowned as the winner of the 2003 Fran-Am & Formula Renault World Championship Winter Series. What makes this extraordinary achievement even more exciting is that the team was founded only nine months ago by University of Toronto graduates Anthony Wei, Enrico Diano, and Akos Toth.

These passionate motorsport enthusiasts were involved in the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) project for numerous years and took home 11 Race Car Engineering awards internationally as a team. Upon graduation, they were looking to continue their success as a racing team – a much better option than working out of a cubicle in a large corporation. The difficulty in finding a job for an existing high level racing team led to their decision of starting a new operation.

Anthony, Enrico and Akos first saw a Fran-Am 2000 car at the Mosport ALMS race in the summer of 2002. They were impressed by its good looks, excellent performance, and modern design. In comparison to a Formula Ford 1600 or 2000 or a Formula Mazda, the Fran-Am 2000 car was better in all respects: performance, safety, and reliability. The Fran-Am series itself looked promising being related to the successful Formula Renault series around the world. It was the best and only opportunity for a new team to get involved while the competition was still on the same playing field.

And so Team Autotecnica was formed. The new team began by putting together a group of advisors, one of them being Terry Cleland, a Canadian Motorsports Legend. They then drafted a business plan that was used to secure investments to fund the new venture, and to purchase their first Fran-Am 2000 car, chassis # 416.

The new car arrived in Phoenix at the 2002 Fran-Am season finale. The car was unassembled in a crate on Thursday and was on the podium by Saturday! Team Autotecnica’s 3rd place debut finish took everyone by surprise.

The team continued fearlessly by taking on the challenge of the 2003 Fran-Am & Formula Renault World Championship Winter Series. Being open to the world, the series attracted leading European teams and drivers with significant experience and results under their belts. Committed to ascertain its talents, Team Autotecnica received two 1st place finishes out of 5 races and took home the prestigious World Championship title!

The three University of Toronto graduates have put together a Canadian team that is truly at a World-class level.
